Patients interact with healthcare organizations and professionals on various levels. Right from booking appointments, undergoing tests, receiving and understanding their reports and diagnosis, and taking treatment, to post-treatment care and payments, each step of care contributes to a patient’s experience with a healthcare system. Much like every other industry, machine learning has been applied to the healthcare field with promising outcomes, and there are more ways in which it can improve the patient experience while easing the burden on professionals. Here’s how machine learning can achieve more of it in the near future. Diagnosis of DiseasesOne of the most prominent areas in the healthcare sector that have the potential to benefit from machine learning is diagnosis. Currently, machine learning is being used primarily for X-rays with the help of algorithms. This involves training a computer on a large set of data to create labels, such as ‘disease present’ and ‘disease not present. As the computer assesses certain parameters to classify the data on the set, its algorithms subsequently undergo changes and adjustments. This is how the computer is trained, following which the algorithms are validated on a new dataset. Replacing healthcare professionals with machines is not the intent when using machine learning for disease diagnosis. However, machine learning can provide additional insights to these professionals by flagging certain aspects of diagnosis, which not only eases the diagnosis process for the doctor but also enhances the patient experience. While the machine provides certain information about the diagnosis, the doctor can provide feedback when the information is incorrect, which further enriches the algorithm. Natural Language ProcessingMaintaining patient records is quite time-consuming, and doctors spend a significant amount of their time entering data, which can actually be spent on interacting with patients. With the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning, Natural Language Processing can be applied to this task, which involves estimating the meaning of spoken and written language to provide useful information to the computer. While implementing machine learning in this area has to be a step-by-step process, technologies driven to improve the efficacy of the healthcare industries are working towards this. When fully implemented, Natural Language Processing can reduce the friction of data entry while making the medical records complete. Sentiment Analysis Patient SurveysAn application of machine learning that can positively impact patient experience is sentiment analysis based on patient surveys. Conventional means of measuring patient satisfaction is using numerical scores to interpret satisfaction levels. Sentiment analysis can add more to the accuracy of these numerical scores and provide an in-depth insight into patients’ experience with the healthcare organization. Sentiment analysis also uses Natural Language Processing to assess unstructured text and assign emotions to it. It goes through comments in the survey and uses its algorithms to analyze the patient’s sentiments. This helps address the exact issues of the patient and work on them, while also tracking changes and improvements over time, which can enhance the overall patient experience. Robotic Nurse AssistantNurses are required to carry out certain repetitive tasks, which, when taken over by robotic nurse assistants, can free up their time that can be spent on interacting more with their patients. Some of these tasks could be measuring the vital signs of the patient based on a predetermined schedule, delivering medication to the patient, and providing essentials such as blankets, food, and much more. This is achievable by feeding patient data into the machine pertaining to their schedules. Based on the data available, the robotic nurse assistant carries out various tasks that improve patient experience and reduce the burden on nurses. Federated machine learning is more about helping healthcare organizations improve their services and enhance patient satisfaction and experience rather than replacing human beings. Machine learning and artificial intelligence have the capability to help healthcare professionals make well-informed decisions based on the insights they provide. It goes beyond modernizing healthcare practices and is more about reducing the care burden on professionals, leaving them with more time to interact with patients and minimize the chances of errors. And so, machine learning in the area of healthcare can directly enhance patient experience and improve the quality of life for people. Bluechip Technologies, Nigeria’s leading provider of business application and data management solutions, announces its European launch following growing demand for its products and services. The strategic expansion positions the company as a new competitive entrant in the EU market offering data warehousing and analytics products as well as highly experienced senior data engineers from its Nigeria team as consultants for European firms. Richard Lewis will lead the European expansion, CEO of Bluechip EU Subsidiary across Europe. Founded in Nigeria in 2008 by Kazeem Tewogbade and Olumide Soyombo, Bluechip leveraged the technical skills and reputation of Kazeem Tewogbade in the IT industry to gain market entry and has since expanded to Ghana, Kenya, Zambia and DRC. Bluechip is a business application company focused exclusively on assisting companies in planning, designing, implementing and operating business application solutions and strategies that are central to creating and maintaining a competitive business advantage, and has been at the forefront of Africa’s data warehousing growth. The company specialises in data warehouse, analytics and enterprise systems for banks and telcos and has worked with enterprise and infrastructure companies with pan-African and global reach, including MTN, 9mobile, FirstBank, Access Bank, GTBank and Lafarge. Having successfully delivered (in partnership with international OEMs, such as Oracle and Microsoft) a range of enterprise tech infrastructure solutions in the African market, Bluechip is now ready to do the same in Europe and plans to target the telco and banking sector, from its Ireland base. The growing post-pandemic trend in remote working, a critical shortage of tech talent and an increase in demand for managing data more efficiently all present a great opportunity for Bluechip to bring its more than decade-long expertise in the sector, delivering highly specialised services in often challenging markets, to the wider EU market. Recent research projects the region’s big data and business analytics market size to hit $105B+ by 2027, with many sectors implementing digital transformation and ensuring their products and services are tech-enabled. Olumide Soyombo, co-founder at Bluechip Technologies commented, “We are excited to be one of the trusted experts answering the growing demand for data products and solutions in the global market. Numerous businesses trust us to provide quality analytics solutions which has led to referrals from our international clients in Africa for projects outside the continent. We are looking forward to combining our expertise with local knowledge to secure new strategic relationships, with the experience we bring from one of the toughest markets meaning we can offer this market the same robust solutions and services.” ![]() Richard Lewis, an industry veteran with four decades’ experience in the technology industry will head up the European arm. He added, “I’m thrilled to work with the Bluechip team, having worked with the founders on a number of other projects throughout the years. As one of the leading data warehousing companies in Africa with an extensive track record of working with some of the biggest OEMs and enterprises, I believe we are well placed to offer immense value to businesses in this region and I am looking forward to building new connections in the coming months.” Bluechip specialises in collating data from disparate sources and transforming the data into information that helps businesses understand trends such as customer lifetime value of the customer, churn and how to make better business decisions based on data gathered. The company believes key to this is strong data professionals and recently launched Primo Academy, a programme designed to equip aspiring data professionals in Africa with the required skills to kickstart their careers in the data and emerging technologies industry. Part of the outcome includes placing some of the strongest talent emerging from the programme into businesses globally, helping to plug some of the worldwide data talent gap. Via https://www.jbklutse.com/bluechip-launches-in-europe-following-successful-pan-african-expansion/ At the maiden edition of Digital Foundation Africa’s Monthly dialogue, which was organized in collaboration with the SG Innov8 hub in Accra, innovators across various sections of the Ghanaian Digital Ecosystem called on the need to have a co-created national digital plan for the Ghanaian digital economy championed by the private sector. Submission by Blaise Bayou, a Technology for Development Lead from the Tony Blair Institute of Social Change, indicated how various sectors of the Ghanaian digital economy is growing steadying with no clear direction to achieve success in the area of Fintech, Agriculture, Health, E-commerce among others. The President of the Ghana Fintech & Payment Associations mentioned that COVID-19 being the major accelerator for adopting digital technologies in the country indicated how inclusive the systems and policies should be, especially to the uneducated. Mr. Martin K Awagah illustrated that Ghana has many success stories in the Africa Fintech Space, hence the need to promote such achievements while considering such in the consensus building of a collaborative national digital plan from all sectors. During the dialogue, the education, health, and commerce sector was a major focus these experts identified as a major priority Ghana should concentrate on having a plan on. However, Vicentia Asilev, an emerging technologies expert, also edged both the private and public sectors to do more research on Artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and blockchain, among other technologies that will help ease the way of doing business in Ghana and beyond while putting privacy and security first. She also called for the need to train more women in these emerging technologies fields with a roadmap in making these emerging technologies the underlining features when drafting and designing a digital plan for the country. “We make payments and transact businesses online every day; government itself is now leading the agenda of digitalization starting with its agencies, and so having a digital policy for the country is a great step and will guide businesses, people, and governments in the digital transformation leading to impacting its citizens” – George Adjebeng illustrated on why we need a national digital plan. Ghana has been one of the first countries in Africa to be good at championing digital initiatives; however, it has a lot of policies across major sectors but not an achievable and measured agenda within its digital ecosystem. Being one of the KINGS in the digital ecosystem, one would have thought she would be the first to have a digital plan, just like Kenya, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Tunisia, and the rest. ![]() By; Excerpts from Digital Dialogue by Digital Foundation Africa.
